The user Sergeant Indie made an excellent set of tutorials that show you how to make the combat system from DnD3e in Game Maker:Studio. The tutorials cover basic A* pathfinding, UI, and finite state machines. The series can be found here.

This is the result of following the tutorials. 

I'm thinking of expanding on it and improving the graphics in the future.
